Also, you can’t mix categories and pages in a same menu. You can’t put a link to a subdomain, which could be the case if you have a forum running outside WordPress for example.

What Sticky Menu improves:

In my previous post I exposed one method how to make a list of the taxonomy terms with Drupal. This method was using the Taxonomy Menu module. However this method has some limitations.

One is that it creates specific URL for the menu item link. It doesn’t use the existing URL for the taxonomy term:
/taxonomy/term/[term-ID]

It links to a page with a URL that looks like this:
/taxonomy_menu/[vocabulary-ID]/[term-ID]

This can be a problem for example when you want to use a module like Pathauto to automatically generate URL aliases. The pages created by the Taxonomy Menu module are not managed by the Pathauto module. So it you want to keep a coherent naming system for your URLs you will need to change manually the URL aliases for these pages.

There is another limitation regarding its “SEO friendliness”. I think it’s always a good thing to use the
title
attribute in the <a> tag. This feature doesn’t come standard with Taxonomy Menu module. So if you want it, you need to manually edit each menu item to add a description.

Considering these limitations, and a process that is somehow quite complex, I have found another method which involves the use of a php block snippet. (more…)

Here is a very common question I encountered while setting up websites with Drupal: How do I make a list of the taxonomy terms that will display like a menu. That is, each taxonomy term should display as a link and when you click you go to the page that displays the nodes associated with that taxonomy term.

This feature is straight forward in WordPress. And this is one I was missing in Drupal. Of course with Drupal when something is not readily available out of the box, it doesn’t mean that it’s not available at all. Actually the more I get to know Drupal the less limitations I see (quite the opposite from WordPress). But we can not say that it is really intuitive.

There is probably several ways to achieve this but the one I have chosen so far involves the Taxonomy Menu module.

WordPress is a great Weblog platform. And what is even better it’s just an excellent publishing platform that lets you do a wide range of different websites.

After walking my way through several custom websites built on WordPress I realize that what I also value in WordPress is all the excellent lessons I learned in webdesign, especially in CSS.

It’s really by using WordPress that I understood all the power of CSS by totally separating content and design. Now when I read again their introduction every word makes sense to me.

WordPress is a state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability.

When I first read it I was thinking that were just words put together because they sound good and were trendy! But it’s really more than that.

I’m now trying my hands on Drupal. I have to admit that it’s probably more powerful as a CMS but honestly it doesn’t beat WordPress in terms of semantic web, web standards and usability.

They throw in plenty of class and ID selectors, so you can probably make your way through and build what you want to with this. But what a mess compare to the true semantic markup in WordPress!

So well, one of the lesson I learned in webdesign is about the image replacement technique. Now I am using it all the time for the heading on my websites.

I’ll develop the concept of egocentric applications in a future article. Here’s a summary:

Centricity: An egocentric application runs on a single computer. It uses data stored on the same computer.

Egoism: An egocentric application only exchanges data when forced in doing so.

Centralism: An egocentric application structures data its own way unless forced in doing otherwise.

From reading these 3 points, you’ve guessed such applications, due to their local point of view, must be easy to program. This is true and the main reason is they make full use of the rapid application develop (RAD) possibilities now included in most IDE’s.

It’s the reason why you should write egocentric applications whenever it’s possible.

Although not every application can be programmed in an egocentric scheme, you, as a software creator, should try not to fall into the traps of the hype and stick to that kind of programming.

Let’s review how you would write an accounting program (as an example) and see how it would fit into the scheme:
