Keys to creating software (and making money…)

May 20th, 2006 ericdes

Discipline is the key word when it comes to software engineering. Try to write a program unordently and you’ll see only bad results… or most probably no result at all! Another challenge for the software creator is to make money from his or her work. There again, it’ll require another dose of discipline.

After many thoughts and researches I’ve come up with a list of keys that will help me to become a sucessful software creator. Because discipline is the main word here I’ve decided to run that list against all new projects I’ll start in the future. No matter what, unless they turn out to be a mistake. However the more I think about it the more I wish I had followed these steps in the past.

In this article I’ll share with you these keys to creating software and making money.

  • Creating software: I’m talking here about writing new software, something which involves coding a new or partly new application. Some of you may think that most projects will fall under that definition. But I just want to stay away from the jobs that only involve software fixing, code remanufacturing and such.
  • Making money: This article is for people like me, whose revenues depend on the success of their work. That’s partly true with everybody, even those on a payroll, but this article will be more convincing to those who sell their work or products.

Let’s not wait any longer and look at the key #1!
